Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) is the application of long-acting insecticides in order to kill adult vector mosquitoes that transmit malaria. This is done by spraying a diluted solution of chemical insecticide on inner walls, ceilings and roofs of dwellings. According to the World Health Organization, the primary effects of IRS towards restricting malaria transmission are:
i) to reduce the life span of vector mosquitoes so that they can no longer transmit malaria parasites from one person to another, and
ii) to reduce the density of the vector mosquitoes. In some situations, IRS can lead to the elimination of locally important malaria vectors.
The insecticides are effective for up to 6 to 8 months and bear additional benefits such as extermination of other indoor insects, which include cockroaches, ants, flies and other.
This method is not harmful to adults or children and is environmentally friendly too.
The insecticides used are odorless, colourless, clean, safe and non-allergic!
